It was a bit of a drag having to walk through an entire desert like that to get back to the main square of Vildia, but Reverie had done it with some help from her newfound partner and spirit, Nehayat Vakili, who went by the name “Sabra” in order to conceal her identity from the world. Reverie had travelled by herself so the depths of Elydresia, a small oasis in the midst of a horribly vast forest. It was a perilous journey to such a place, but she’d had to do it in order to successfully summon her spirit without much interference. Going back was still as troublesome; however, with a companion, it would not seem as horrible. Plus, the little oasis had its share of fruits, nuts, and various other legumes, so although the journey took a week or so, they were well prepared.
Now she was back in Vildia’s main square, and Sabra had decided to look around for other summoners as well as get a better feel for the terrain. The pink-haired girl allowed her to go ahead, as she was not much interested in these things and would prefer to laze around and do nothing. The main square, however, was too much of an attraction to leave until tomorrow, so she had been spending the morning look around the bustling bazaar for things she could possibly buy. So far, she’d found nothing of interest, but regardless of her fruitless search, she vowed to herself that she would get something for Sabra as a sign of their new comradeship. Sabra would enjoy that; she just seemed too wound up all the time, even in a public place like this. But to that, Reverie could say nothing nor protest; to each his or her own, right?
It was about twelve at noon and the young girl had basically exhausted herself wandering about, and all to no avail either. She sat by herself on a nearby bench, just as her stomach growled in protest. Luckily, she’d had a good store of fruits from the oasis, so she didn’t have to needlessly spend on the necessity. Crouching over, she lifted her knapsack and took out the first one she could find – a red apple. Or rather, it looked to be an apple, but the fruits in that place wouldn’t have the normal names mortals gave them, would they? Regardless, it was food, and that was what she needed at the moment.
Within a few good minutes, Reverie had consumed the fruit, and felt satisfied. She stood up, grinning slightly, as she readied herself to resume the market hunt. It was a good few miles away back to the bazaar, but there was a shortcut that she knew of around here that would take her there in less than five minutes, instead of the usual ten. Clapping her hands together to rid herself of any debris of the apple, she got up, slinging her bag over her shoulder and melodiously singing herself a tune as she got her journey underway.
It was nothing but a small, thin alleyway, devoid of bright lights and easygoing tourists. It would be scary to one that had never taken this path before, but to Reverie who had done this a million times, it was not. She started towards the center of the alley, arriving a good two feet or so away from the exit when she felt it. A cold, grimy feeling that had suddenly substantiated inside her body, a heavy, oozing feeling that trespassed on her blood and made her movements slow and sluggish. She started coughing madly, clutching her stomach as though something had a hold of it. ‘W-what’s happening?’ It was all she could do to muster those three words. Her vision blurred, as though she had just been shoved into a pool unwillingly, but with pain more extravagant than just such a thing happening. It felt like her insides were screaming despair, paralyzed and unable to move a step further. She wanted to scream, wanted to let someone somewhere know that this should not be happening. But her voice box seemed constricted, and not even a whisper could come out. She could not breathe, and before long, she had taken her last breath of air before the world went black, and the hard ground came colliding with her already unconscious body.
